The system

Three words for the line

All five runs and two of the passes use Wall and Wrap. The other passes use Seawall. A lineman always knows from the call whether the play is a run or a pass.

Wall

The play side blocks down, away from the hole. Take the inside gap first. If no one is in it, take the next down lineman inside. If he is covered, climb to the linebacker.

Wrap

The backside guard pulls. On Nor’easter and Breaker he turns up inside the kick-out and blocks the first linebacker. On Riptide he goes around the Hinge’s block. On Undertow the guard kicks out and the Hinge wraps.

Seawall

Dropback and bootleg protection. Every lineman steps to one gap, all in the same direction, and Anchor takes the edge they slide away from.

Why play-action and not run-pass options. On Gale and Buoy the line takes the same Wall and Wrap steps and stops at the line of scrimmage. A lineman who drives a defender more than 2 yards downfield on a pass that crosses the line is an ineligible receiver downfield. A called pass removes that risk, and the defense still sees a run.

Common questions

Questions coaches ask.

What are the three words?
Wall, Wrap and Seawall. Wall is the play side blocking down. Wrap is the backside guard pulling. Seawall is slide protection for the dropback and bootleg passes. A lineman always knows from the call whether the play is a run or a pass.
What does Wall mean for a lineman?
Block down, away from the hole. Take the inside gap first. If no one is in it, take the next down lineman inside. If he is covered, climb to the linebacker.
Who pulls on Wrap?
The backside guard. On Nor’easter and Breaker he turns up inside the kick-out and blocks the first linebacker. On Riptide he goes around the Hinge’s block. On Undertow the guard kicks out and the Hinge wraps.
Why play-action instead of run-pass options?
On Gale and Buoy the line takes the same Wall and Wrap steps and stops at the line of scrimmage. A lineman who drives a defender more than 2 yards downfield on a pass that crosses the line is an ineligible receiver downfield. A called pass removes that risk, and the defense still sees a run.
Does anyone block below the waist?
No one, anywhere on the field. NFHS 2-17-2 allows it only inside the free-blocking zone under conditions a player would have to judge mid-play, so the offense simply never does it.
Which plays use Seawall?
Boardwalk, Jab and Four Winds. Every lineman steps to one gap, all in the same direction, and the Anchor takes the edge they slide away from. Slipway has its own screen footwork.
